When the weather turns cold and the snow stacks up, there’s no place I’d rather be than deer hunting late season whitetails with my longbow. We’re lucky to have some great late season whitetail hunting in north Idaho after all the other big game seasons are over. This year we’ve had a huge amount of snow which made the conditions for a spot and stalk hunt pretty difficult but, with lots of deer around, I couldn’t help myself. Although hanging a tree stand on a well-used trail is really the way to go on a hunt like this, slipping around the hills, trying to stalk in on one is just too much fun.
Unlike elk season, where we may get just one or two close encounters, there’s literally a deer (or ten) in every draw in this area. You can afford to goof off and mess up because there’s so many opportunities that you don’t feel like it’s the end of the world when you get busted. You just move on to the next one, and the next one. In the end, you’ve just got to go with the flow and not take things too seriously. After all, on a hunt like this, it’s all about having fun bow hunting late season whitetails!
