I grew up in the south, way down in what was once a rural part of Florida; a place where hog hunting has a long tradition. This week Clay Hayes is back in the southern swamps bow hunting wild hogs with his primitive osage orange recurve bow.
Although there is no hog hunting season, weapon restrictions, or any kind of regulation at all to govern the hunting of wild pigs, Clay chooses to limit his gear to the primitive archery gear he builds himself. An Osage orange selfbow and primitive bamboo arrows.
Hogs are an introduced species meaning they’re not native to North America. They were brought here early on after the first Spaniards landed and soon naturalized. They’re very prolific breeders sometimes having multiple litters in a single year. They’re also very destructive and looked upon as a pest in much of their current range. But as destructive as they are, feral hogs are just plain fun to bow hunt.
On this hunt we’ll be doing a little spot and stalk hunting in the swamps and woods of southern Georgia. Follow along with Clay as he tries to bring home some free range, organic, wild pork and a few new stories to share around the camp fire with friends and family.
